Jackie Hernandez

Hi! My name is Jackie Hernandez and I have been a teacher for 21 years here at Terra Vista. This will be my 12th year teaching 3rd grade. I have also taught 4th and 5th grade in the past.

I have been married for 17 years and have two amazing boys - Sebastian (15) and Santiago (13). I grew up in Corona and now reside in San Bernardino. I received my Bachelor’s Degree and teaching credential from Cal State San Bernardino, and my Master’s Degree from National University.

When I’m not in the classroom I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Both my sons are active in multiple sports - baseball, soccer, and BMX. I love traveling and baking.

Teaching is my passion! For as long as I can remember, I have always loved school and learning, and I hope to instill those same values in all of my students!

Scholastic Book Clubs

Placing your Scholastic Book Order is simple! You can submit your online order at anytime.

Visit
http://www.scholastic.com and enter our class code H4N4L.
By placing an order on Scholastic you are helping us earn books for our classroom library! Thank you!

Families, we can partner together to develop a love of learning and reading in your student. One way to do so is to support your student in finding both "good fit" books (ones that are at their reading level) and books that are a theme or topic of interest to them. Having lots of options to read will help develop their fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and so much more!

B.O.B.
Battle of the Books (B.O.B) is a voluntary reading incentive program that students can participate in. Students will be asked to read from a selection of books. The goal is to motivate and encourage students to read, while having fun competing with their peers.

Please visit the Etiwanda School District Library page for a full listing of the
BOB books for 3rd Grade for this coming school year.

Technology

This year your student will have access to a ChromeBook for use in the classroom. Students will learn to use the touchpad mouse, navigate school programs, and type their response on the keyboard.

In preparation for using technology, here are some web based games that may be helpful in building computer literacy skills:

Key Board Climber
Alpha Munchies
Typing.com
Typing Club

Supplies:
If possible, students are requested to bring in a pair of headphones to use in class. These will be for their personal use (not shared), and will be stored in the classroom when not needed.

Students much prefer over the head headphones rather than "ear bud" type headphones. They also last longer :)

I've purchased ones similar to what's pictured below at DollarTree and 5 Below. *Please write your student's name on their headphones.

Vocabulary

Prefix, Root Word, and Suffix

Many English words are formed by combining basic words (root words) with prefixes, and suffixes. Prefixes are added to the beginning (pre) of the word, and suffixes are added to the ending of the word. These combinations of words make new words. Being able to identify the prefix, suffix and root word can assist a reader understand the meaning of that word. This is a useful skill to foster reading growth in our students!
