WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE!

Hello! My name is Sarah Meyers and this is my 9th year teaching Language Arts and Social Studies here at Heritage Intermediate. I am also the 6th grade Leadership and H.I.S. Dance Crew Advisor.

I received my bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies at the University of San Bernardino and my Master's degree in Teaching and Learning at the University of Redlands.

In my free time I enjoy being with my family & friends, country music, beach camping, organizing, crafting, and football season (Go Rams!).

I believe that hard work always pays off and your mindset shapes your path.

I am looking forward to a wonderful 2024-25 school year!

Exploratory Class: 6th Grade Leadership

M2-M6

2024/2025

What is Leadership?

Leadership is a year-long elective for students who serve as leaders at H.I.S. In order to be a part of 6th grade leadership, students have to go through an application and interview process at the start of the school year. Once selected, they are a part of the leadership team at H.I.S. and are expected to represent themselves and the school in a positive light.

What Do We Do During Our Elective?

Here are some of things we participate in during our elective time:

  • Plan and organize lunch time rallies

  • Assist with campus clean up

  • Help promote school wide events

  • Learn about and discuss what it means to be a leader

  • Learn the different aspects of student government

Universal Access

Our primary focus will be to reinforce what is being taught in Language Arts and provide opportunities for extension and acceleration in Language Arts.

This will be accomplished by exploring and examining novel studies. We will be reading novels. During each UA class we will be reading several chapters in class (challenge reading, with table groups, with a partner, choral, or listening to a playaway to promote listening and speaking skills). During the reading we will discuss and analyze the chapters, respond to various questions, compare/contrast characters and events, and reflect on our reactions to the text.
Our second novel study we will be reading A Series of Unfortunate Events: A Bad Beginning. We will analyze the plot, characters, theme, and respond to various questions using verbal (Kagan structures) and written responses.
